Game Review: Super Robot Wars Z2 Hakai Hen

A series that started back in 1991 with the first game being for the Game Boy and has since released numerous games for various console and handheld devices. The main feature of the Super Robot Wars franchise is that each games story features a crossover of various mecha anime, manga and video games to make a combined plot.

The game I am reviewing today is Super Robot Wars Z2 Hakai Hen (Destruction Chapter) for the PlayStation Portable which is a sequel to Super Robot Wars Z which came out in 2008 for the PlayStation 2. This game features a huge number of popular recent titles such as Code Geass, Shin Mazinger, Macross Frontier, and Gurren Lagann. In addition to that they feature some of the older popular series such as VOTOMS, Godmars, and Dancouga. At first I played this game because it featured a few series I knew. But after finishing the game I came to like a few other series that I never knew about.

The story of the game is set a few years after the events of SRW Z occurring in an alternate world which is torn between Three Nations. The Advanced European Union (AEU), Human Reform League (HRL) and Britannia-Union. The world has two moons and two Japans. One which is known as Area 11. From time to time there are dimension quakes where Dimension Armed MONster(called DAMON) appear and cause havoc. The main plot is focused on Gurren Lagann, Code Geass, and Gundam 00.

The gameplay is like a strategy RPG where you move around your units around the map and defeat enemy units. The units in the game are divided into two categories. Super robots which have high HP and strong attacks but are slow and always get hit and real robots with high avoidability and movement ranges but have low health and weaker attacks. Different units have different roles besides attacking like having units for healing and units for recovering energy and warships where units can be placed inside to recover HP and EN.

For the graphics the game has fluid attack animations. Though the sprites are super deformed, the animations are well done and the attacks resemble how they originally looked in the units series. There are also pilot/mecha cut-ins which look very cool. Like in SRW Z the units attacks also have different animation depending on whether the enemy unit is in the air, ground, or underwater and whether the move defeats the enemy. I can see that the SRW team has put in a lot of effort into this game despite the limitations of the PSP.

Then comes the music. The music are instrumental remixes of the series opening or OST. It features songs like Gurren Laganns’s opening song sorairo days to one of Code Geass’s OST Elegant Force. I really liked Sorairo Days, Heats, Honoo no Sadame and Just Communication.

This game has 50 missions excluding route splits while less than other SRW games is still quite a lot. This game covers the events of most series till the halfway point of their story arcs and there is a sequal called Super Robot Wars Z2 Saisei Hen (Regeneration Chapter). The game is relatively easy and the story is interesting even if you don’t understand what they are talking about. A must have for any mecha fan.

Game Review: Sound Voltex II -infinite infection-

Sound Voltex II -infinite infection- has hit the arcades last month, but not many people know it, or even heard about it. Is it a horribly designed game, or just a good game that no one plays?

So exactly what is this game? Being -somewhat- a veteran in music games, I tried this game for the first time, and, jesus, it wasn't easy at all.

Just from the controls we can see where this is going. We play as DJs and remix songs. 6 buttons, 2 knobs, what can go wrong? Crazy patterns, fast-paced songs etc. This is a game that will get your adrenaline running. You can match up with 3 other people for each song. The higher your ranking at the end, the better the rewards.
As with most music games, there isn't any plot or story involving the game. Not that anyone is complaining, for a music game is a music game .

Gameplay
The player is required to use various buttons to hit the notes appearing on the screen. There are six vertical columns on the screen with notes coming towards the Critical Line at the bottom, and the aim is to hit the notes when they are on the Critical Line (also know as the judgement line in other games). There are six buttons and two knobs to the left and right of the buttons. After a note is hit, a judgement is then received, from the highest to the lowest: CRITICAL, NEAR, and ERROR. While CRITICAL increases the gauge, ERROR depletes it. The player passes the stage when the gauge reaches the Clear Zone, at 70%. At the end of the song, a grade is given, from AAA to D where D is the lowest rank, based on the performance on that song.

Music
Sound Voltex's songs are mainly produced by independent Japanese artists; mostly VOCALOID producers. Songs generally fall into the trance, dubstep and techno genre. Big names in the NicoNicoDouga site are here, such as: Kemu, daniwell, cosmo@bousou and more. Not only that, remixed soundtracks from popular bulllet hell shooter game, Touhou Project is featured here with REDALiCE and ARM(IOSYS). Finally, it's worth a mention that this is the first Bemani game to feature self-made content in their game.

Unlock system
Surely you would want more content right? You can unlock more than 30 songs from the SOUND VOLTEX STATION. At the end of every song, you will earn 2 types of in-game currency, Packets and Blocks. Blocks are used to unlock songs, while Packets are used to unlock Appeal Cards, a nice way to call display picture. Certain requirements will allow you to earn more Packets and Blocks, such as matching up with other players or achieving a 100% on the gauge.

Graphics
The graphics is surprisingly impressive. Constant FPS and also breathtaking high-speed graphics will let you feel that you are really remixing the song.

Overall
A well-made game with great design. The cabinet looks amazing, along with the great graphics in the game. Also, it's not a game that is we have seen in the market. A new game, a bold move that was successful.

Score: 8.5/10

Game review: StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm the second installment in the trilogy with this installment focusing on the Zerg race. It is an expansion that requires StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty to play.

Like most of the StarCraft series, this game is a RTS(real-time strategy) game that involves gathering resources and building armies to fight enemies. To win, strategic thinking is required for things like anticipating moves and forming strategies.

This expansion features 27 new campaign missions and a 7 new units. The campaign mode focuses on Kerrigan who is the queen of the Zerg race. Kerrigan additionally acts as a playable hero unit in the campaign.  During the course of the campaign by doing the bonus objectives you can customize Kerrigan and your army. This makes the missions more interesting to play although the story seems to be poorly written

The multiplayer mode is also improved. With the new units and changes to some of the existing units gameplay feels different from the gameplay of Wings of Liberty. This means that players will have to learn new tactics and learn to anticipate the enemy’s moves again. Because of this there is a new feature that while during a replay of a battle you had, you can take control of the game at any point. This lets you try out if by making a different decision would change the outcome of the battle.

All in all I would say that StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm is game worth buying as it has a fun multiplayer for those hardcore gamers.

Score: 7.5/10
